Smithfield Peat Co. recycles acres of “useless” mixed waste with AirMax

Feb 13, 2018

SMITHFIELD, RI –
Smithfield Peat Co. is a road and utility contractor and an organic and aggregate materials producer that provides services to real estate development affiliates and third parties.  In its early days, the company’s 81-acre headquarters contained a 17-acre peat bog, hence the name “Smithfield Peat” Co. They originally sold screened peat and loam fortified with peat, earning a reputation for producing highly organic soils. Since 1964, the company has been committed to the organic recycling of leaves, grass, brush, and stumps from its own projects. They also accept a high volume of inbound material from landscape customers who dumped yard waste free of charge for many years. Over the last five decades, they’ve grown from a family-owned peat bog into one of the leading organic materials producers of screened loam, compost, and mulch in Rhode Island and Southern New England.

Rapid City’s landfill increases compost production with CBI 6800BT horizontal grinder

Dec 27, 2017

Wood grinder for compost

RAPID CITY, SD – Jeff Barber has worked at the Rapid City Solid Waste Division for 18 years and currently manages their yard waste and landfill operations. The division processes three different types of compost: Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), yard waste, and a 50-50 MSW/yard waste mix. The MSW and 50-50 composts are processed in a controlled environment. The yard waste operation manually waters and turns compost to maintain an aerated, hygienically safe, and finished product.

The Rapid City Solid Waste Division is a regional facility. The waste they accept and process covers a large portion of Southwestern South Dakota. Due to the limited number of composting facilities, contractors in other counties—and even other states—rely on the landfill to accept material.
