D & S Environmental Services Works To Preserve the Future

by Tom Franz

There are three types of individuals who make up the world we live in. The first spends the time allotted to him here as an observer, quietly watching life go by until he reaches his golden years and locates a front porch for his rocking chair. The second, and most common type, has all of the best intentions, constantly meaning to get started on this path or the next, but never really manages to get anything off the ground.

Excuses abound, but the truth lies in the fact that for these people, the risk always seems to outweigh the benefit. Then, finally, there is the third type. The one who sees life as a challenge to be met, faced, and conquered. The one who forges his own opportunities because he recognizes that life is too short to spend time waiting around for something to happen. And D & S Environmental Services is headed by just such an individual.

An avid outdoorsman all of his life with deep roots in the community that actually go back for seven generations, Dan Stinchcomb began life following in the footsteps of his father who had operated a produce farm before Dan went on to found D & S builders. Here, he was highly instrumental for many years in the creation of numerous developments and subdivisions in Fayette County, Georgia, until about five years ago when the vagaries of an unstable housing market and the fact that he was now well into his seventies forced him to take an honest long hard look at the future. “There just isn't enough time in life to do all that you want to do … and all that can be done,” he said.

The result of this self-assessment, however, was not the previously mentioned porch and rocking chair. Instead, with a single grinder and a keen interest in preserving the environment, he opened a transfer station designed to handle municipal solid waste that was on its way to landfills. This, combined with his years of hands-on experience in the construction field, led to the recognition of the importance of units that would process construction and demolition materials, and commercial/industrial debris. Grinders would also be needed out in the field where they could clear the woods and timberland necessary for roads, while grinding the material harvested into a useable mulch that could then be recycled back into a saleable product that was good for the environment.

Today, D & S Environmental Services is manned by a staff upwards of thirty-five people and operates seven grinders as it employs a down to earth, sensible approach to business. The first step is to go in and clear and grade the land for the roads that will service the subdivision, leaving the trees on the property where the homes will be built.

“Nobody wants to live in a barren dessert,” said Stinchcomb. “I may be in the grinding business, but I like there to be trees around the house. People want to be able to look out their windows and enjoy the environment the way nature intended.”

The next stage is to step aside. After finishing his job of clearing the land for the right of way so that water lines, sewers, gas, cable TV, grass, curbs, and shoulders can be installed, Dan Stinchcomb recognizes that it is time to divide the property into lots and sell it to the builders.

“I know there are some developers who want to clear the whole land and grade it flat, but I just don't like that. I prefer the kind who likes to leave the trees,” he said, providing further evidence of his love for the outdoors.

D & S Environmental Services recognizes the fact that there will always be garbage and housing debris. Currently, there is a burning ban in existence in Fayette County that is in effect for six months out of the year. As municipalities become more and more environmentally conscious, it is most likely that this ban will be extended until it eventually goes into effect on a year round basis. This translates into the simple fact that there is going to be an even heavier demand placed on those who grind the material, a challenge that D & S is most willing to accept.

As the grinder business continues to grow, Dan Stinchcomb is prepared to accept and process the refuse that comes in from the cities at his 20,000 square foot transfer station. Fed by a fleet of a dozen trucks and trailers, some of which are capable of carrying 100 yards of debris, this station is kept exceptionally busy. With walk-in trailers that can unload themselves with movable forward walls, with trucks with tippers that can raise and unload their cargo, the entire operation reflects the great deal of forethought and planning that went into its assembly and construction.

“We built this place from the ground up and have everything under one roof. We knew what had to be done and where the potential was, and so

we designed it the way it should be designed.”

Between grinding waste materials to much smaller amounts so as to relieve the strain on the landfills and clearing right of ways for developers but making certain that as many trees as possible remain behind, D & S Environmental Services of 252 First Manassas Mile in Fayetteville, Georgia is actively doing their part in serving the environment. Their office can be reached at 770-719-4669.

“There just aren't enough hours in the day. I have my business and I'm proud of what I do, but I also have a big garden that I like to tend. And then, there are always the fish to feed and the outdoors to be enjoyed. I guess what I really need is what there just isn't … more time.” reflected Stinchcombe.

Continental Biomass Industries, Inc. Produces Job-Specific Equipment

by Tom Franza

New Hampshire is often referred to as “The Granite State,” an appellation that can be modified to apply to Continental Biomass Industries, Inc. (CBI) headquartered at 22 Whittier Street in Newton NH, 03858, because of the rock-solid grinding and shredding equipment they produce.

Look at the “Live Free or Die” slogan on a New Hampshire license plate and you will notice a single-mindedness of purpose and determination, a sense that there is only one way to handle a situation … the right way. This concept of doing things the right way also fits in with CBI's philosophy.

While some other manufacturers of shredders and grinders may tend to fabricate a generic model that is then adapted to fit a customer's requirements, CBI prides itself on being different by producing machines and systems that are job specific.

“Our goal is to help people to set up a system. Among the first questions we ask are: 'What is the end product you are trying to make? What are your outlets for the product and how can we help?'” said Dave Rutherford, spokesman for CBI. “Then, keeping the response uppermost in our minds, we charge our design team and our technical staff with the task of constructing a system that precisely serves the client's needs. Let's face it; if you are shredding wood waste and green material, that requires a different approach than does say construction or demolition material that can have multiple contaminants in it. By combining our customer network with our sales force network, we're able to better help our customers grow their businesses.”

As a company that is dedicated to the recycling industry CBI manufactures Grizzly Mills®, horizontal grinders, shredders, chippers, screening systems, conveyors, and stump shears. With both portable and track grinders, units powered electrically and by diesel, CBI prides itself on its ability to deliver a turnkey operation specific to the client's required application. A recycling facility or a transfer station needs a picking station and a different grinder and screen set-up than would be called for by someone producing mulch. The recognition of the fact that one-size-fits-all can be a lot more costly in the long run is what has helped to sustain their loyal customer base.

“I'm proud to say that ours is the heaviest, most durable machine on the market,” Rutherford avowed, “and this is where the benefit lies for those who understand the difference. Whether it's the Magnum Force 8400 series that works best with C & D debris that can contain contaminated material or the 8600 or 6800 for the wood industry, the operator knows that his machine is a true work horse that can grind at rates of up to 600 cy/hour. Our new 6400 series is capable of providing material for the emerging biomass and wood fuel and chip industry and provides the customer the flexibility of four different field-swappable rotors.”

Along with these machines CBI also manufactures the Annihilator, a low speed, high torque primary shredder with first-rate production capabilities that can handle over 100 tons of contaminated C&D and MSW per hour. Couple any of their equipment with one of their screening systems and it is easy to appreciate all of the numerous, viable combinations available to those in the recycling industry.

“There is probably nothing more taxing on a machine than when it is asked to tackle the debris that has been left behind after a major storm,” Rutherford pointed out. “In these cases you not only have the usual debris that is found when doing normal land clearing, but you can also have everything man-made that Mother Nature has picked up and swept along in its path. Now the material to be fed to the machine has been blended together into a contaminated mass containing assorted metals and concretes as well. Surviving this is a true test of a system's worth, and that is just what our equipment is built to do,” he proudly added.

Whether it's a system designed for municipal waste, or for wood, metal, plastic, or even sheetrock, whether it's a multiple-discipline type system or a single purpose driven one, whatever the client's needs, the folks at CBI are there to assist. New England Recycling Installs Complete Processing System in MA

"We've always run CBI equipment as part of our grinding operations," says Gil Lopes of New England Recycling (NER) in Taunton MA "so when it came time for us to completely upgrade our C&D processing line so that we could improve our productivity, it was a simple decision to turn to them again." CBI worked with NER engineering and operating personnel, and designed, built, and installed a system that included trommel screen, feed, picking, and discharge conveyors, and two CBI Grizzly Mills. "I saw a lot of CBI equipment working at a lot of facilities before we chose to go with them on this project. No matter what the conditions, it always seemed to be running well...and staying up and running is the key to success in this business." >Read More

CBI Proves Its "Metal" to Pacific Land Clearing

Rocky Botkin and his staff at Pacific Land Clearing in Portland OR know what it means to take a metal hit in their grinders. "Before we bought our two Magnum Force 4800's from CBI we were running machines made by a different manufacturer", says Botkin, "every time we took a metal hit, they'd be down for two days, and cost us thousands in repair costs and lost business. With the CBI's, the worst we've ever been down is two hours. It's a solid steel mill, so when metal hits it it doesn't give...It reminds me of a 1970 Chevy...something you can work on." Rocky's dad, Jack, notes "The CBI is the most effective and reliable we have had."  >Read More

CBI Annihilator Helps Alabama Company Weather the Storm

When thousands of cubic yards of mixed C&D debris began pouring into his landfill properties in Gulf Shores AL and Pensacola FL in the wake of September 2004's Hurricane Ivan, Jeff Claunch, owner of Sunbelt Environmental knew he needed a machine that could do some serious processing. "We were taking in 15,000 yards every day," says Claunch, "and we needed something that could process large amounts of different kinds of material and give us significant volume reduction. Once we had the machine for a week, we were convinced the Annihilator was the machine for us."  >Read More

CBI Grinders Shred Up a Storm for S. St. George Enterprises

Steve St. George, owner of S. St. George Enterprises has had years of experience grinding waste as part of his site prep and utility business in Fredonia NY. But when an ice storm hit the Carolinas four years ago, he found a new way to capitalize on his resources -- cleaning up storm debris on a contract basis. Since then, St. George has bought three grinders from CBI, including a Magnum Force 4800, a Magnum Force 8600, and an Annihilator. "We tried one of the dual-shaft shredders before we bought our Annihilator," notes St. George, "it didn't work. The other machine needed to be dug out between 6 and 15 times a day because the discharge conveyor continuously jammed...and wear was a huge problem. The Annihilator eats the rest of them."  >Read More

CBI: Like a Hurricane

Horry County SC was devastated by Hurricane Charley when it blew through that coastal region, home of Myrtle Beach, in September of 2004. "Our CBI 4800 was four years old at the time" notes Gerald Johnstone, director of operations for the County's Solid Waste Authority's landfill in Conway, "but after the storm hit we started grinding for about 15 hours a day, every day, and we never shut it down until we caught up." Once they did catch up, they went back to normal operating mode, using their 4800 to process wood and pallets, and highly abrasive shingles for recycling and use on temporary roads. >Read More
